Early onset Alzheimer’s Disease with behavioral disturbance. That’s what the PET scan revealed and the neurologist said to the three of us seated in his office last month—Gary, his brother, and me. Strangely, my first response was relief. At last, we know what has been vexing Gary’s brain for the past five years and turning his life (as well as the lives of those around him) upside-down. These have been five hard years. Now it’s about to get harder. But at least we know why.
The wondering is over. The planning begins. First up is wedding planning. I know it sounds crazy, but we got engaged the day before the diagnosis. Through it all, our love has grown stronger. We will walk down the aisle and then onward together through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
Gary’s many friends often call, email or text me to see how he’s doing. I created this blog to tell the story of our unfolding odyssey and keep everyone up to date. Please check back often. You can also subscribe to the blog by entering your email in the box below. Then you will receive an email every time I post an update—I plan to do this about once a week. Stay in touch! Diane and Gary, I wish you many happy moments in your marriage! I love the title of your blog. Everyday is a new day, and today you are, we all are, here! I am a strong believer in marriage and have been married, going on 12 years, to my best friend and husband Chuck. I send prayers of strength knowing about Gary’s diagnosis. My dad is in middle to late stage of Alzheimer’s and I didn’t know much about the disease in the beginning. It seems you both know quite a bit, and that knowledge will help you in the future. I pray for a cure as well! Much love Debbie
